Both Invisalign and traditional braces can give you a straighter smile — but they work very differently. Here's what you need to know to make the right choice for your lifestyle and goals.

How Invisalign Works

Invisalign uses a series of custom-made, clear plastic aligners that gradually shift your teeth into position. Each set of aligners is worn for about two weeks before moving to the next set. The aligners are removable — you take them out to eat, drink, brush, and floss. This makes oral hygiene much easier than with traditional braces.

How Traditional Braces Work

Traditional braces use metal brackets bonded to your teeth, connected by wires that are periodically tightened to move teeth. They are fixed in place and cannot be removed during treatment. Modern braces are smaller and more comfortable than older versions, and ceramic options are available for a less noticeable appearance.

Which Is Right for You?

Invisalign is often the better choice for adults and older teens who want a discreet treatment option and can commit to wearing aligners 20–22 hours per day. Traditional braces may be more appropriate for complex cases, younger patients, or patients who prefer a fixed appliance that doesn't require discipline to wear consistently.

Key Takeaways

  • Invisalign is removable and nearly invisible — ideal for adults
  • Traditional braces are fixed and may be better for complex cases
  • Both options can achieve excellent results when properly followed
  • Schedule a consultation to find out which is right for your smile
