TMD / TMJ Treatment in Grandville, MI
Jaw pain, clicking, chronic headaches, and morning soreness are often dismissed as stress — but they are frequently signs of a temporomandibular disorder. At Grandville Dental Health Center, we evaluate the whole system: your bite, your jaw joint, and the muscles that move it.

The temporomandibular joints connect your jaw to your skull and carry an enormous amount of daily work. When the joint, the surrounding muscles, or your bite are not working together, the result can be pain, limited movement, popping and clicking, ear discomfort, and headaches. TMD treatment is about identifying which of those factors is driving your symptoms and addressing it conservatively.
Benefits
- Relief from jaw pain, facial soreness, and tension headaches
- Conservative, non-surgical treatment options first
- Custom oral appliances made from impressions of your teeth
- Protection for teeth and dental work from grinding damage
- Coordination with specialists when advanced care is warranted
What to Expect
Your evaluation includes a review of your symptoms and history, an examination of your jaw joints and muscles, an assessment of how your teeth come together, and imaging where appropriate. From there we build a treatment plan, which commonly begins with a custom appliance, bite adjustment, or muscle therapy. If your case calls for specialist care, we coordinate that referral.

What are the most common signs of TMD?
Jaw pain or tenderness, clicking or popping when you open and close, difficulty or discomfort chewing, locking of the jaw, earaches without infection, and frequent headaches — especially in the morning — are the most common signs.
Will I need surgery?
Most patients do not. The large majority of TMD cases respond to conservative treatment such as a custom oral appliance, bite adjustment, physical therapy, and habit changes. Surgery is reserved for a small number of cases and is only considered after conservative options.
Is a night guard the same as a TMJ appliance?
They overlap but are not identical. A night guard primarily protects teeth from grinding. A TMJ appliance is designed to position the jaw in a way that reduces strain on the joint and muscles. We will recommend the appliance that fits your diagnosis.
